Confessions of an Addict

“Hi, I’m John”

“Hi John.”

“I’m addicted to the truth of God’s Word.”

“I think about it often. I tend to be drawn toward it and take it in until I’m fully enmeshed and immersed in it.

When God says that the apostle Paul wrote Colossians, I do not question it like scholars would ask me to.

If a portion of God’s Word seems to be misplaced, I believe God put it there for a good reason and I question my doubts instead of questioning God’s Word.

If someone tweaks or twists God’s Word I get all emotional and upset. I’m on the verge of being totally out of control.

When God says that Jesus died to set me free from the power of sin in my life, I have this tendency to actually believe it. This is contrary to all common cultural reasoning. I actually begin to question the necessity of sinful addictions in Christians.

I’m so glad I was able to talk about this today. I’m looking forward to being part of a support group to help me with my addiction to the Bible.”

The crowd politely decided to provide supportive applause as John took his seat.

More on the author:

An Abused, Marginalized Person in American Society

I am not only marginalized and ridiculed, I am the downtrodden of American politically correct society through many media. I am a Christian man who believes in promise keeping. I believe the Bible is true and has inherent authority over all of us. I am a husband who believes in the roles of love and submission in marriage, and a father who believes that blatantly disobedient children should be spanked. I am the brunt of jokes, sit-coms, and advertising, where I know nothing compared to almost anyone. I am a white, Protestant, Christian fundamentalist who attends some feminized, egalitarian churches who inadvertently minimize the men. I’m someone who believes that Jesus is the only Way to God, and I believe Jesus will come back soon, and that some will be left behind. I do not believe that each person is created equal, but instead that each person is created to be wonderfully unique with the same Lord as Judge of each individual person’s unique choices, actions and attitudes. I do believe in a hierarchy of God-appointed earthly authority, and that some people should be loved more than others because of relational priorities, starting with love for Jesus and then my wife. I believe that God has prepared an eternal place of punishment and continual torment called the lake of fire. I do not believe in universal reconciliation of everything to God by reasoning that God’s love must overcome His justice. I believe that the message of the gospel is that the Lord Jesus Christ died for my sins and everyone must place their faith in Jesus alone in order to be right with God. I do not believe that the earth is my mother, or even my step-mother, but I do believe that God is my Father, and that the present earth is under God’s curse and will ultimately pass away by God’s sovereign hand of judgment, ultimately to be made completely new by His power. I understand if you are already making fun of me in mock empathy. I’m used to being laughed at. In addition to all this, my name is often taken in vain or abused by unthinking people. My name is John. In the best of cases my name appears as a disciple of Jesus or one of the NT writers. Usually, my name is an example on a check, or a sample signature on a line. If someone wants to break up a relationship they send a Dear John letter. If someone is picking up a prostitute, he’s a John. If someone has to relieve themselves, they go to the John.

I’m tired of the abuse.

  2. Sorry, I didn’t laugh at all (until the Johns). You must have a source for your beliefs…Might it be the Bible?

  3. Hi Pastor John: Thanks for your honesty and for giving such a profound testimony of your faith and the foundation of your teaching as a pastor. I believe we at WCF are blessed tremendously by God’s gift to us – that’s you as our Pastor. You might add that now you are usually called PASTOR JOHN. Fitting.

    • Thanks Lois. I’ve let this blog slide for quite some time. I may be re-energized to start again soon.
