The Gospel According to Jeans ‘R Us — UHD 14:6
“Nobody’s listening. They’ve lost touch with reality.”
“They don’t even care about God’s creation, they disengage from culture, they talk as if they know it all, and they run over people with their hierarchal attitudes. They don’t even agree among themselves to the point where there’s no unity.”
“They think it’s enough to tell people how Jesus died on the cross, rose again from the dead, and how He will forgive their sin. I mean, is that all? C’mon, we see the gospel as being about conforming this world to heaven in a holistic way.”
“Let’s plant a church that focuses on the whole message of Christ, and emphasize creation care and stewardship of the environment.”
Great idea. We’ll have unity in the church then too.”

There is an expression “I knew what you were making the minute it started cooking.” My mouth has dropped down over this blog. Better you than me is all I can say. I mean – I get it, but man – that is a lot of toes. I like to think of the “emergent church” ideas as the fanciful thoughts of spiritual adolescents. Only time, reality and mistake will cure its thoughts, but in the meantime – and trust me – I am completely disenfranchised – isn’t it better that they mature within the body of Christ, than out of, and allow God to do his correcting work over time? Or is it that we are to stand up against engaging culture as a means of fishing for men, and focus solely on the gospel? The Latte first, Christ second mentality has trickled down to this. Great Christian leaders kept silent when The Purpose Driven Church came out and drew in big dollars, and no one spoke up when mega churches stunted the growth of meaningful community church planting and evangelism, so the emergent church is now the natural backlash. I attend a Saddleback-style church, and the gospel message is solid – the lattes ain’t half bad either – but my priorities are in place. Not so several years ago when I was more carnal than Christian. Time, grace and the gospel changed that. I get the “Don’t drink the cool aid” message of the blog (sigh). It is all so frustrating.
Hi again Z! Welcome to the dialogue. My Post is not limited to the emerging church at all. I would love to see all of us maturing in the body of Christ. My concern is for the nature of the gospel message, since I believe that adding to the basic gospel message could distort its message. We must focus our message and engage people in a way that they can hear the true gospel, and if that involves sipping lattes first, cool. The gospel has been complete for hundreds of years of preaching and witnessing, without addressing environmental issues.
Additionally, starting a new church does not solve the unity problem. We have to explore deeper into our thinking and our relationships.
Hi Dr. Wecks. I don’t normally post comments, but I think I will here. My son and I are teaching the Word of God in a new church plant. We’re five years old now, and I continue to use the principles of Inductive Bible Study for all my classes and preaching. We’re teaching our youth these principles, adapting them to their age levels. The problem with inductive Bible study, is it’s glaring when you hear someone who hasn’t used them. I’m also, along with Z, frustrated by watching some of my friends buying into the postmodern teaching that seems to be hitting the church here in my area. The doctrine of salvation is under attack. And Paul had some very hard words for those who were teaching a different gospel. Keep the articles coming.
